The Department of Library and Information  Science(University of Kashmir) established in 1970 is committed to the University’s mission of teaching, learning, research and community services. By integrating technology with the curriculum,we impart knowledge and skills for Information professionals as well as being actively engaged in innovative projects,conduct of seminars,workshops and development of Digital Libraries.Research Programmes (M.Phil,Ph.D) and publications in peer reviewed journals is our regular facet.A Bi-annual research journal "Trends in Information Management" is being published regularly and indexed by different services since 2005.Extension services and Training programmes offered during four decades by the department has enabled in successful modernization of libraries particularly in the state. The Department established  a 'Digital Repository'  popularly known as "KNOOR" harvests and uploads ETD’s and research contributions of three premier institutes (University of Kashmir, SKIMS and SKUAST) and has recently been inducted in UGC-DRS-I under SAP (2011-16) for the thrust area of Digital Library Research.

Future Plans

Establishment of “open source software” Lab

Evolving preservation cum conservation lab for benefit of students and training them in basic techniques of P&C and also carry research in future.

Intend to design a new lab equipped with latest cameras, editing suits, studio, audio and video tools and to train students to create, organise and disseminate different knowledge packages.

Department is planning to start a course on “ICT Applications in Library and Information Sectors”.
